A few changes in 3A...
-
There are a couple of significant moves involving some very good programs, but at least our balance was not messed w/ as 2A Regions all stay about 23-26, 3A's are 27/28 and we kept all those 4A regions at 20 or below ::)!

It is sad that in some cases location can dictate almost have the kids assigned to a Regional will not be able to participate; and then there are some locations that can't a 16 man bracket.
-
Long day, can you give examples of what you mean? I'm trying to understand the issue better. For as long as I can remember there have been regionals that did not fill the 16 man bracket and some regionals had significantly more wrestlers than the 16 man brackets allow.
What I don't understand is why some people want sectionals further reducing the pool of wrestlers to fill a 16 man bracket.

That is a good question. For most regionals across the state, there is so much difference in the quality of wrestling past the 8th seed. However, due to the inflated records of some individual wrestlers and the lack of quantity scheduling for some programs - kids just get left out of the regional tournament through no fault of there own. And in other cases the inflated records of some wrestlers distort the actual quality of the seeding process.
As the trend for most wrestling conferences is not to have end of season conference tournaments, a sectional tournament replacement for that tournament would offer a better seeded regional tournament.
We use to have a sectional, regional and state tournament format before in NC.

When was the change made from the format above to the current format?

NC was like NJ- had only one division. It's been a long time since NC changed. We had sectionals that were huuge! I think we had like 35 teams in our sectional. Top 3 went to regionals with a predetermined 2-3 weight classes took 4. Regionals were as tough to Q as states, and states were like a Grand State Championships. I think the change was made mid to late 80's? But I'm not sure.

Time to go back to the 3 tiered system for qualifications. NC is the only state I am aware of that has only 2, and some states have 4 levels.
The current seeding criteria for regionals is a bad.
