Title: Freestyle National Teams
Post by: Oldman63 on June 05, 2019, 10:02:45 AM
How's out Schoolboy, Cadet, and Junior teams looking this year? Does anybody have the rosters?

IDK about schoolboy but last I checked they didnt have full rosters. One of the lowest turnouts i've ever seen.  We never send the best possible teams but we usually have some pretty tough guys going. This year the numbers are down though. The qualifier was in the far east this year and that may have effected it but many people who won their spots didn't want them.

Hate to hear some of that.  I am not crazy about the qualifier being in Wilson. Should it just be at the state tournament? It would be nice to see our best going. Is it a cost issue? How does our team cost stack up with other states?

I don't wanna speak bad on wilson because the town of wilson treated NCUSA amazing. They provided catered food for the coaches and officials social after the tar heel and the venue was pretty good outside of limited restrooms.  I will agree that it being that far east may have limited some people attending. But there were still many strong and courageous kids who are from western NC.  Big problem with pushing it to the state tournament as being the only qualifer is that it limits the kids fundraising time and limits the teams time to fill spots. If they do not fill a spot at the Tar Heel then they do use the state tournament as the next step to qualify.  Having to choose between Fargo and the duals is a big factor. Many want the glamour of Fargo but affording both trips is extremely difficult.  They offer discounts and scholarships to help bring the costs down but its still costly especially to both.

I don't know what a solution would be.  Some of our best wrestlers don't even wrestle the international styles so we'll never put out our absolute best team like Illinois or Minnesota. Those guys bring their absolute best to the Duals and thats why those two teams are in the finals every single year, Usually in both styles. It depends on what pool we get put into one. Two years ago the Junior team randomly drew minnesota first round in both styles. Took a thumping.

I had a couple different people tell me Wilson was great and really supported the tournament.

Rough day for the Cadets in Greco pool play. 3 dual losses and not many individual wins.

Cadet and Schoolboy both get 1 dual win in Greco to place 7th in the bottom pool.

Both Cadet and school boy did about the same in free style. They won very few bouts on the mat.

I think Juniors did just as bad. They forfeited 7 or 8 every dual and did not win many bouts either.

NCUSA needs to find a solution or forgo dual meets. My guess only a handful of kids will go to Fargo as well.

I agree. I am not sure what a solution would be but the product going to the duals at this time is not very good. How does NCUSA get our better kids to go? Joe Sealy and Kage Williams both won TOC in the Schoolboy division. You have to get those 2 on the team some how.

Are these kids going to fargo? Are they old enough to compete in cadet division yet?

No, they are not cadet age yet. They must both be 14 entering the schoolboy division at TOC.
