Title: Makes no sense...
Post by: bgrayii on April 22, 2021, 11:19:17 AM
We, Union Pines, are members of the Tri-County 6 conference with 5 other schools.  For our conference tournament we can have a round robin format with 6 guys per wt., but we cannot put the 6 wrestlers in an 8-man bracket and wrestle back!?  We are lucky, as we can just do the round robin, but it sucks for a conference with more teams.

Also, the explanation of "we are aren't changing the wrestle-backs b/c we are limiting all sports" is sorry.  Very few people will notice or care if the regional and state tournaments have wrestle- backs from the quarters, plus it is still a limitation.

Makes absolutely no sense! None of it does. It's all an act to say we're being proactive. Let us be safe, sure. But some of these safety measures defy logic.

Is this in writing somewhere or did you just ask Tra?

This was explained in the zoom meeting wrestling coaches had with Tra yesterday morning.

Are there minutes posted from the zoom meeting? Or possible a print out of points of emphasis. I'm sure it all could have been an email. Didn't need to make us look at their faces while they screwed us.

What about doing two pools of 4 (in an 8 team conference) and then wrestling the champ/3rd place matches?

So we can have a 6 man round robin which has 15 total matches but not an 8 man bracket which only has 12 total matches??????  I thought the idea was to limit exposure and keep it safer.  Additionally in the 8 man bracket the max exposure is 4 for 2 wrestlers, 3 for 4 wrestlers and 2 for 2 wrestlers, but in the 6 man RR all 6 have 5 exposures.

I understand how wrestle backs work. I have clarification question regarding Regionals and States.

Regionals:
Quarters are completed. Will the only matches conducted after be the semis (2), 3rd Place match (1) and Finals match (1). No others?

States:
Same question as Regionals. Which would mean only recognizing 1st-4th placer finishers. Is that correct?

I emailed Tra and asked him this:

"Clarification on conference formats - round robin is OK but double elimination is not?

If so, and there are more than 6 in a weight class, can you do two pools of four for RR, then cross for 1st and 3rd place?"

His response was:

"Round Robin is okay, double-elimination is not allowed to keep it in line with regionals and state championships.  You can set up the round robin however you want."

I take this to mean that putting wrestlers into pools and cross bracketing for the top four places is OK, so that is what I plan to do for the conference tournaments I am running if the weight class exceeds 6 wrestlers.

did anybody ever get a response about 4 teams weighing in at the same school but only wrestling 2 matches each.

option 1 = run 2 mats, need 2 refs
rd 1 A vs B, C vs D
rd 2 A vs C, B vs D

option 2 = run 1 mat have 4 matches total

I see it could cause an issue with limited number of refs, but is it allowed
