Just curios how everyone feels about a possible 5A class added to NC. Is it fair that the biggest school in 4A

Myers Park - 3688 ADM competes with the smallest school in 4A West Meck - 1262 ADM?

If our goal is to  water down being a state champ even more then yes,  it is not about being fair, life is not fair.
NC already has to be constantly defend the 4 class system at the national level when it comes to recruiting. If we could move to a system that would allow the state champ and runner up from each class wrestle in a 8 man bracket the following week after the state tourney that would be more of a benefit than moving to 5 classes.

I vote for reduction down to 2 or 3 classes.

Team wise...I agree that a 5A class could be used...but only for the team State tournaments. Individual wise, I still believe that everyone should be in 1 class for 1 State champion in each weight class. Go back to the old Sectionals, Regionals, State. Just my opinion.

Not only should there not be a 5A, NC should go to 3 classes instead of 4.

I feel that we should stay with 4 divisions. It would be nice to get to the old 1A/2A, 3A and 4A days. For all those that want to have less divisions and just one division, I have a question. I know a lot has to do with tradition but the states that normally produce top recruits(PA, Ill, OH, IA, MN, NJ etc.) have at least 2-3 divisions in each of these states. Only CA and maybe NY??? have a one class system. How is that PA, Ill, OH, MN, IA, NJ can produce such talent with a watered down mutli division system in place?

I like the idea of combining 1A and 2A and combining 3A and 4A.  Making two classifications for wrestling.

You people wanting to combine divisions for wrestling aren't taking into consideration the loss of revenue for the NCHSAA.  Due to that alone this isn't going to happen.  The 1A division has become much more viable to last couple of years and isn't the laughing stock that is used to be.  I'm not necessarily in favor of a 5A so to speak, but whatever happens it just that, whatever.

Indiana, Delaware, HI, KY, CA, and NJ all have a one class system in no way is it beneficial for NC wrestling to go with a 5 class system. Indiana is a one class system with no wrestle backs you lose you are out.

Again only three of these states produce good wrestlers on a consistent basis: Ind, CA and NJ. Is a one class system as good as everyone thinks it is? Why or why not?

I really have no issues with a one class system. It is my opinion that moving to a 5 class system will not move NC wrestling forward in a positive direction. Watering down a state title is not good for the sport unless we had a ultimate state champ tourney the following week. Making it fair should never be the goal. I do not understand how it is unfair when we are already in a 4 class system. The number of students enrolled in a certain school has nothing to do with that individual on  the mat fighting for a state title. Of course when it comes to team dual having a larger student body to pull from is a benefit but individually it has no advantage.

It’s all about money. I agree it waters it down. But when you see the budget for wrestling, we’re literally hemorrhaging money at the state level. They take a huge loss on wrestling every year. If we want the sport to continue, they need to find a way to increase their revenue. An additional class means more kids in the state tournament, more people at the venue etc etc

Teague, how exactly is the NCHSAA losing money for wrestling?  I completely disagree with this.  They are not paying for the venue, nor do they pay for the set up.  Their hotel rooms are free.  The only expenses I can think of are medals, bracket workers and officials.  The officials who escort wrestlers to the mats are volunteers.  Table workers are volunteers.  They're making money.  Don't believe otherwise.

Someone suggested that multiple state tournaments doesn't increase revenue.  That is totally absurd.  With another 14 weights of 8-16 wrestlers that will bring in many more spectators that pay.  There is a significant financial incentive to adding another state tournament.

From what I've been told by someone in the know, the consideration is dividing 4A for duals only and the tournament would remain the same, but the problem is the NCHSAA would have to change their bylaws to be able to do this.  Their bylaws call for 4 classifications not 5, so adding another classification would require changing the bylaws.

I'm going off of what they posted in the graphic at the coaches clinic.  He put up an image showing some large number, I can't remember the figure but said that that was how much money they go into the hole every year for wrestling.

HUMMMMMM..if what was presented was accurate then there must be something more to it, but I don't see how they're losing money on wrestling..if they are then a wrestling person should be brought in to help figure out a way to make the tournament profitable.  There is absolutely zero reason they aren't making profit off the state tournament.
