Within the video of this article regarding the Winter Meeting of the NCHSAA, Tra stated that there were about 350 girls that wrestled last year and he expects that number to be around 400 this year. Based on what he said, we are a long way off from having a true girls' wrestling season and a true state championship for girls' wrestling.

When is someone going to complain to the NC Board of Education about this disparity and/or bring a TitleIX lawsuit against the NCHSAA?  With only a very few exceptions, the NCHSAA seems to be perfectly fine to let girls get pummeled and man handled by the boys.

With many of the states that have sanctioned girls' wrestling, our reported girls' participation numbers by the NCHSAA are very much inline with those states that have sanctioned girls' wrestling.

Any thoughts?

From the High School OT:

GIRLS WRESTLING IS CLOSE TO BECOMING A SANCTIONED SPORT, BUT NOT THERE YET

There was a discussion at the NCHSAA Board of Directors meeting about girls wrestling. I will have much more on this later this weekend on HighSchoolOT.com, but here's an early look for the newsletter subscribers...

The NCHSAA is open to sanctioning girls wrestling as a sport in North Carolina, but more schools need to add the sport before the board can vote to do so. NCHSAA bylaws require 25% of the overall membership to offer a sport or 50% of a classification.

There are 427 member schools in the NCHSAA, which means 107 would need to offer girls wrestling for the board to consider sanctioning it. Right now, the NCHSAA estimates 150-160 schools have a girl on the wrestling team, but only about 70 have multiple girls. The board discussed what constitutes having a girls wrestling team -- is it one girl? Two girls? A certain number of weight classes? These are things the board still needs to determine.

It is clear girls wrestling is growing quickly though. The NCHSAA has held the girls wrestling invitational for five years. In year one, there were about 70 participants. This year, the NCHSAA expects to have about 400.

This will likely be an agenda item at future board meetings. I'll have more on this topic soon on HighSchoolOT.ocm.
